2008-2009 U14 Girls
August 2008
Dear Girls U14 Players and Parents,
I’d like to officially welcome you to tryouts and to the 2008-2009 hockey season. The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to the coaching staff and to give you information about the team and an overview of our upcoming season.
I’m excited to announce that the entire coaching staff from last year’s U14 team will be returning again this year. As Head Coach, I have been coaching the Arvada U14 team since inception in 2006. The team won the MSGHL Champi-onship in 2007 and the Rocky Mountain District Recreational Championship back-to-back in both 2007 and 2008. Prior to coming to Arvada, I coached in both the U14 and U10 age divisions at Colorado Select. Betsy Winchester and Hilary McNeish will be rejoining the team as our Assistant Coaches. Hilary will be working with Timm Lorenz, the Arvada Goalie Coach, to provide support for our goaltenders, and will be working with all three of the Arvada Girls teams throughout the season. Earlier this month both Hilary and I were fortunate enough to attend a Girl’s and Women’s Coaching Workshop in Lake Placid where we learned from some of the best coaches and players in our country. We are excited to apply all of what we learned and are enthusiastic and energetic after returning home from the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.
This year we will again compete as a member of the Mountain States Girls Hockey League (MSGHL). The U14 division of the MSGHL has been divided into two levels this year: U14A Competitive and U14B Recreational. We will com-pete in U14A against Santa Fe, Telluride, Colorado Select and Aspen; and we will also have exhibition games against Steamboat and Gunnison. As a part of the U14A Competitive division, we are officially considered a USA Hockey Tier II team. In addition to competition in the MSGHL, the coaches will be looking to select tournaments for the team to partici-pate in, both in and out of state. Stay tuned for more information as the season progresses.
To quote Ben Smith, Head Coach of the 1998, 2002 & 2006 US Women’s Ice Hockey Olympic team, “Hockey is a simple game, but its not that easy”. As such, the goal for the U14 team this season is “Work Hard to Play Hard”. Training this season will not only include on-ice sessions and dryland, but sessions at Total Hockey Academy, team outings to watch hockey games, volunteer events in the community and other fun outings.
My coaching expectations and philosophy remain unchanged. As members of the Arvada Girls U14 team we will conduct ourselves with the utmost integrity. We will show respect for the players, parents, coaches, officials, Arvada Hockey Association, the APEX Center and all of our competition. We are committed to physical and mental development and to creating a fun and successful season regardless of what is on the scoreboard. Our specific team policies and pro-cedures will be reviewed in early September with our parents at the first Parents Meeting and with our players at the first Team Meeting. Dates for each of these meetings will be published on the team website following tryouts.
Again, I’d like to welcome you to the 2008-2009 season. I look forward to meeting all of you and working with you throughout the season. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Sandy Artichoker, Girls Division Coordinator.
See you on the ice!
Coach Jen
